Just What Are You Looking At?

The doors clank shut behind Jane. She glances around timidly. Her fingers and hand shaking subtly and uncontrollably, but manages to extract some moist, crumbled dollar bills from her pocket. Without a word, she navigates the straight line towards the back, looking for an empty seat, one that would afford her a view of the passing scenery. The bus lurches and forces her down into a nearby opening. Recovering from the jerk, she slides her way across the seat, pressing her body against the cold glass and metal. A flash catches her attention. Just as quickly as it appeared, the blur is gone. Jane tries to remember the moment that was a mere snapshot of light and color. Inside a box, a ripped curtain pulled halfway across the opening, a young girl stood. Leaning provocatively forward, a flash illuminated her figure. From the bus, in that fleeting moment of clarity, it looked to Jane that the girl was barely covered, but reason argued against that. Jane settled back into her seat, watched the scenery slide by. The memory of the naked girl in the booth popping back into her mind often, a fairy with silken wings, sent to cloud her mind and numb her thoughts. Some random girl in a photo booth shouldn’t bother her, but it did. What was it about the girl? Jane was living life now, she was out of her house, she was moving on. She scooted closer to the now warm metal and glass, clinging to it. It was ok, she was safe, new life flashed past her with each moment. Now she was truly living, now she was out in the world.

As inspired by this photo by Scott James Prebble.

I hope it will suffice.
